Monitoring the temperature inside the cabinet has the potential for be the best investment in the data center. Server cabinets can house hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of equipment. The applications and functions this equipment processes are often critical to the operations of an organization. Rack monitoring can detect potential problems before they cause system failure. The money saved in hardware and uptime can pay for the implementation of the monitoring equipment many times over. ASHRAE standards* recommend the monitoring of temperature at three points within each cabinet: 1) Front Bottom 2) Front Top 3) Rear (exhaust). This practice helps ensure that cabinets are receiving adequate cooling and air flow.
* The American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) publishes "Thermal Guidelines for Data Processing Environments" which provide data center managers, engineers and designers standards and best practices. |
