Panels
Most likely the most simple and cost effective method for
improving air flow efficiency is the use of blanking panels to fill
unused "U" positions in rack or enclosure. Nearly all
major servers intake air from the front and expels warmed air out the
back. Blanking panels serve two important purposes. First,
they keep cooled air that is targeted to the front of the rack
(perforated tiles, blowers) from dissipating before it reaches the upper
portions of the rack. Secondly, it keeps warmed air expelled from
the back of servers from re-circulating to the front air in-take.
Studies have shown up to a 20 degree reduction in hot spots with the
introduction of blanking panels alone. The relatively small
investment can pay huge dividends with increased cooling efficiency.
